Update from the British National Championship
This years British Nationals is being held in the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy the venue of the 2012 Olympics. Last year Cian Byrne (RCYC) won the open junior title so Irish hopes were high for a repeat performance this year.
British Nationals day 1: After the Irish featuring strongly at the front of the fleet during the practise race the outlook was good and sailors and parents were in great form.
Fantastic summer weather, blue skies & sunshine and approx 10 to 15 kts of wind greated the sailors in the dinghy park on day 1. The parents thought they were in the south of France the sailors knew they were at an Oppie event as the business of rigging started in earnest.
After a quick launch on the wide slip way 3 races were completed in beautiful sailing conditions.
6 races will be completed on days 1 & 2 as part of the qualifying series. After results are in for day 2 the sailors will be divided into silver and gold fleets with approx 75 sailors in each fleet.
The race management of the event so far is superb and 3 races were completed in 8 flights.
In the junior fleet 2 irish boats featured in the top 10 Daire Cournane (KYC) in 5th position and Robert Dickson (HYC) in 8th position with Fergus Flood (HYC) following close behind in 11th position.
Peter McCann (RCYC) won 2 of his 3 races and clocked up a respectable 10th place in his 3rd race of the day leaving him in 3rd position in the senior fleet.
