Profile of a Sailor : Harry Whitaker RCYC
Harry is 14 years old and is one of the most senior sailors on the Irish Optimist circuit.
Harry has been sailing on a yacht with his parents since he was a baby; he started sailing Optimists when he was 9.
He is a member of the ISA squad, and is one of the Transition group which means that this is his last year sailing Optimists and will move to another boat next year.
Harry has had a great Optimist career; in the past year he has sailed in the Garda International event, in the Trofeo de Ciutat event in Palma, in Monaco Team Racing event where he
captained the team of his home club, RCYC, and in the Irish European team in Tavira, Portugal last Summer. He has made friends all over the world at these events, particularly in the UK,
New Zealand and Denmark.
Harry has a sister Emily who is sailing in the Optimist Junior fleet, and his brother David is sailing Lasers in Baltimore this week.
Harry is hoping to have a great last year in Oppis and will probably do some Feva sailing in RCYC this summer, with a plan to move to 420s in 2013.
This concludes our profile of a sailor series. The names of the sailors to be featured were drawn at random from a hat. The idea was to profile our very youngest sailors through to the
most experienced sailors that we have. Afloat magazine will also be featuring some of our sailors in the next addition. |
