The 2011 regatta fleet national championships have just been completed in HYC in super weather conditions. A mixture of light winds, sunshine and then rain & wind enabled the fleet to complete 12 races. As the week progressed & the ability of the sailors progressed the races became longer & more challenging.

The 49 sailors were grouped according to ability & age & friendships. Each day they were assigned to a different instructor. Katie Malcolm the IODAI Head Instructor created a session plan covering 7 different topics. The skills that she wanted the sailors to learn included Tacking / Boat handling skills / Starts / downwind sailing….. The sailors rotated through the topics & completed 45 mins onshore / classroom work on their daily topic before launching. On the water they then practiced what they learnt for 90 minutes before having a lunch break. Racing occurred in the afternoons.

The race officer also managed to complete a re-run of the Leinsters & Connaught championships which had been blown out earlier in the season.

All children completed the week with no drop outs. Many prizes were awarded and everybody went home happy having completed a fantastic weeks sailing.
