New IODAI President, Tim Lucas of RCYC
Tim Lucas of Royal Cork Yacht Club was elected president of the International Optimist Dinghy Association of Ireland (IODAI), at the IODAI AGM in the Royal Irish Yacht Club last weekend.
Speaking after his election Tim said, “I am honoured to take on the role of President of the largest junior sailing class in Ireland. Optimist Sailing is the foundation class for all sailing in Ireland. Some of our greatest sailors started out in Optimist boats, including Olympic winning medallist Annalise Murphy.
Sailing is a great sport for children to be involved in at all levels whether as a fun club sailor or competing internationally . It gets them out in the fresh air on the water in literally the biggest playing field in the world, while at the same time making friends for life. This is very important in an age where lots of children spend too much time indoors, on electronic devices and not communicating with others.
I am really looking forward to helping introduce many more children to Optimist Sailing in Ireland and growing the appeal of sailing to Children around the country.”
Tim takes over from Aidan Staunton, who served as president of IODAI for 6 years. At the AGM Aidan said “It was a great honour to be IODAI president and work with Irelands largest youth sailing class. I wish Irish Optimist sailors all the best for the future.”
