Important – IODAI Optimist Measurement
All Optimist boats racing in Snr and Jnr main fleet have to comply with Class Rules. This ensures the fairness of sailing for all and also ensures that all boats comply with regulations and are safe for our sailors.
There are measurers at most Optimist events and they are always at the IODAI Nationals. They’re role is to check the equipment used by the sailors on the water and to make sure that it complies with Class Rules.
Getting used to maintaining your boat’s documents is excellent preparation for sailing in other classes in the future and is an important part of the education you receive from sailing Optimists.

Optimist Measurement Timing
Measurers get quite a lot of requests, in particular in the busy summer sailing period. Therefore we would ask sailors and their parents to please allow a minimum of week turnaround for your measurer.
What needs to be measured on an Optimist?
- The hull is measured (this should be documented in the Boat Measurement book you got when you purchased your boat)
- All equipment used has to be measured (Sail, Foils & Spars)
Optimist Measurement Prices
To avoid confusion standard measurement prices have been introduced. These are as follows:
Individual items:
- Sail €25
- Spars €20
- Foils €20
- Full set €50
Optimist Measurement Courses
IODAI are planning on running a course to train new measurers. If you would like to attend this course please email your interest to honsec@iodai by Friday 27th July.
Optimist Measurement and Regatta Fleet
To sail in Regatta Fleet, boats must be Optimist dinghies which comply with the spirit of the rules. No formal measurement documentation is required to sail at events.
Who sets Optimist Class Rules?
Optimist Class Rules are maintained by the Technical Committee of the Optimist Class International Association (IODA).
