Irish Oppie sailing stands up in Holland

International Optispring Regatta 2017 Results overall after 2 races left Irish Sailor Harry Twomey of CHSC & RCYC in joint first place in Seniors with Dutch sailor Olivier Jaquet after some great sailing battling with the best in Europe. A strong performance from Junior sailor Johnny Flynn of HYC left him in 5th place in Juniors. The Irish sailors that traveled did their country proud with many strong results from the Irish sailors on the water at the event.

215 sailors attended the event from many countries including Belgium, Holland, USA, UK, Poland and Norway, with the event serving as a qualifier for squads in both Holland and Belgium.

There was a big contingent from Ireland with 17 sailors traveling for the event and Irish coach Dara O’Shea. The first time in three years that Ireland was represented at the Optisprings. Great fun was had by all and a wonderful welcome was received from Port Zelande.

Great to see the Irish Optimist sailors building from great results two weeks ago in Torquay.

There was great sailing on day one but unfortunately on day 2 there was no wind and racing was finally abandoned at 2:30pm so the series couldn’t be completed.

A special thank you to Fran and Billy O’Riodran who’s quayside apartment inadvertently ended up as the Ireland base!
