Vice President’s Cup team racing event, HYC 14th June
Howth Yacht Club will be holding their Vice President’s Cup team racing event on the 14th June (the day before the Leinster’s). The event is currently the only team racing event in the Irish Optimist calendar and is always well supported by clubs and teams from across the country.
Team racing is an excellent way for sailors to hone their tactical skills and, unlike fleet racing, success is reliant on teamwork. Feedback from sailors is always good with the format of short, quick-fire racing appealing to many. Twelve teams will participate in the event. Historically the event has been an inter-club challenge with clubs across the country putting forward teams (with each team having a least one member of each gender). The top club team wins the VP Trophy.
The great performance of our sailors at last year’s European’s has resulted in Ireland qualifying for a place in this year’s Optimist European Team Racing Championship in Lake Ledro, Italy. To facilitate IODAI in selecting a team to represent Ireland, the VP Cup organisers will allow several non-club teams to compete in this year’s event. Such teams must fulfil the European Team Racing eligibility rules, including the requirement for teams to consist of two girls and two boys. In the unlikely event that the VP Cup is cancelled, IODAI will offer the Ledro team places to the two highest finishing boys and girls at Trials and will continue down through the list until a team is filled (nb Worlds Team sailors are not eligible to participate in the Ledro event).
