2024 Irish Sailing Youth National Championships
As you all know, our season really gets going in May but our Oppies do participate in Irish Sailing’s Youth Nationals which this year will be in the Royal Cork Yacht Club, Crosshaven on the 4th to the 7th April 2024.
Our experienced Oppie sailors are an integral part of the week and will join the ILCAs, Toppers, 420s and 29ers. They get great exposure to seeing other classes which they’re not too far from joining and the results from Youth Nationals will be used to choose sailors for three of our International Teams.
To assist in the prepration for the event and to give an overview of the Teams program for 2024 we will be hosting an online presentation on Thursday, 8th February 2024 at 8pm – a link and further deails will follow through WhatsApp.
While there’s been no substantial changes to the rules governing eligibility from last year there are some changes to the Teams which we want to tell you about.
We’ve updated various supporting documents to assist parents and sailors, found below along with the list of eligible sailors. Well done to all those sailors!
A copy of the Notice of Race can be found here
For eligible sailors, this year entry for the event is through the Irish Sailing Youth Nationals event website, for eligible sailors, and is open now.
Dont forget that measurement will take place prior to registration on Wednesday the 3rd April 2024 and to assist we have put together a handy checklist and guide which can be found here!
Irish Sailing have asked us to remind competitors of the following;
- The Youth Nationals is a fun event for Youth sailors across Ireland to experience the pathway and get information about all the classes from coaches and role models within the pathway. However, it is also a performance event used to select teams for national squads. Entrants should consider their experience level before deciding to enter an event that due to the time of year can be cold, windy, and challenging. The Youth Nationals should never be a sailors first outing on the water of that season and ideally entrants would have completed the previous summer regattas and participated in winter training at their club or region.
- Sailors are required to have an 8m painter attached to their bow – this is a class rule
- As part of an increase in safety awareness, there will be Safety Equipment Inspectors for each class to check over boats at launching each day.
Don’t forget for those attending, you must renew your membership for 2024 and update your Measurement Self Declaration Form – which is done through your IODAI account https://members.iodai.com/login
