Tom Higgins flies the flag in Bermuda!
Tom Higgins of the Royal St. George Yacht Club represented Ireland last week at the Renaissance Re Junior Gold Cup 2016 in the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC).
Tom was one of 16 International Sailors invited, selected according to rankings, competing along with the Bermuda National Squad.
Racing took place in brilliant sunshine, in the crystal clear waters of the Great Sound. After four days of racing against very talented sailors, in mixed and challenging conditions, Tom finished a very strong 4th overall.
The International Sailors were taken on a special tour of the Team Oracle base where they met Americans Cup skipper Jimmy Spithill. Team Artemis also addressed the Sailors. The Oppies gave both America Cup Teams a good run for their money when they met on the water! Surfing, barbecues and sightseeing with he host families rounded off an amazing week for the sailors.
Between Toms performance at the British Nationals and in Bermuda he has really displayed the high standard of Irish Optimist sailing and has done his country proud.
When asked about his experience in Bermuda Tom said
“I would like to say thank you to RBYC and IODAI for organizing such a great opportunity, I had an amazing week and made some great new friends.”
