Regatta Fleet report from Ulsters 2013

Last weekend (26th/27th) saw the Optimist Ulster Championships return to Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club after a great event there in 2013.  There were 24 entries in the Regatta fleet. Taking part in the regatta fleet is an important start to any Optimist sailor’s career. Well done to all our sailors in the fleet at the weekend. Let’s hope it’s a great start for future sailing.

This year the regatta fleet is led by Head Coach Kirsti O’Flynn from Royal Cork Yacht Club and deputy head coach Connor Hopkins.

Day one winds were very light and shifty but all regatta fleet sailors made it safely on and off the water completing 2 races.  They had heavy weather training in the morning and completed two races before the gusts increased to 17 knots which put an end to sailing for the day.  Day 2 brought beautiful sunshine and light winds. Due to the efficiency of the slip master & his team, the regatta fleet had a quick turnaround which enabled race officer Johnny Millar to successfully run 5 more races to complete the series.

Conor Gorman won two of the five races which he comfortably won by keeping his boat as flat as possible & hiking like a pro! In the lighter races he was closely followed by Oscar Lubliner and Best local sailor was John Joe Miller (from RIYC) and youngest sailor Stephen Cunnane from RCYC. Kirsti & Conor look forward to seeing you all at the next event in Galway.

The overall prizes went to:

U 10 & overall winner: Conor Gorman                     U 9 winner Oscar Lubliner                         &nbs p;                      Best Local sailor: John Joe Miller

Youngest Sailor                  : Stephen Cunnane
